The Last Plastic Straw

//The Last Plastic Straw

I recently had the opportunity to photograph Jackie Nuñez, founder and program manager of The Last Plastic Straw, for Voices of Monterey Bay (VOMB). Nuñez’s non-profit aims to eliminate single use plastic straws.

These cheap pieces of plastic are added to our drinks without us asking for them. They don’t break down and easily enter the ocean where they threaten sea creatures and add to the massive plastic patch already floating offshore.

As I photographed her above Sunny Cove Beach in Santa Cruz she held a handful of single use plastic straws that she collected on the two minute walk from the nearby Starbucks.

It was really sad how much plastic waste was on the ground, especially so close to the ocean!
